More Tons per Trip in a Single Truck
Super dumps and super tags are the backbone of Southern California paving and grading. B&D Transportation runs both, with drivers who have spent years backing them into pavers, under grinders and onto grading sites.
A super dump uses a trailing booster axle — often called a strong arm — mounted behind the rear tandem. When the truck is loaded, the axle comes down and spreads the weight over a longer wheelbase, so the truck can legally carry close to what a truck-and-trailer can, while still handling like a single unit. When the truck is empty, the axle lifts.
A super tag works on the same idea with a longer box, adding cubic capacity for lighter materials. Both cycle quickly at the plant and on the job, which is why they are our go-to trucks for asphalt and grindings.
- Super tag — up to 20 tons payload, longer box.
- Strong arm / super dump — up to 20+ tons payload.
- Single-unit maneuverability on job sites and city streets.
- Fast load and dump cycles for paving and milling work.

Typical payloads — exact capacity depends on axle, wheel and tire configuration and California weight limits.
What We Haul in Super Dumps and Super Tags
- Hot mix asphalt from the plant to the paver.
- Asphalt grindings and RAP from the milling machine.
- Aggregate base, gravel and sand from the quarry or yard.
- Dirt import and export where a bottom dump won’t fit.
Super Dump vs. Super 10 vs. Bottom Dump
Super dumps and super tags carry more than a super 10 but still back in and end-dump like a single truck. A bottom dump carries similar or more tons and unloads faster on open ground, but needs room to drive through and can’t place a pile. For paving, milling and most mixed-use jobs, super dumps and super tags hit the sweet spot. See the full comparison in our dump truck sizes guide.
Experienced Super Dump Drivers
A trailing axle changes how a truck backs and turns, and how it has to be set up before dumping. Our drivers are experienced with super tags and strong arms — it is what we hire for — and every driver is vetted with a clean DMV record. Interested in driving one? See driver careers. Super Dump FAQ
What is a super dump truck?
A super dump is a dump truck with a trailing booster axle, often called a strong arm, behind the rear tandem. When loaded, the axle lowers and spreads the weight so the truck can legally carry more; when empty, it lifts.
What is the difference between a super dump and a super tag?
Both use a trailing axle to carry a heavier legal load. A super tag has a longer box for more cubic capacity; a strong arm super dump has a shorter, more compact box. Our super tags carry up to 20 tons and our strong arms up to 20+ tons.
Are super dumps good for hauling asphalt?
Yes. Their fast load and dump cycles and single-unit handling make them a favorite for hot mix asphalt and asphalt grindings.
How many tons can a super dump carry?
Our strong arm super dumps carry up to about 20+ tons, depending on configuration and California weight limits.
